Teaching Week 9: Writing Christmas Letters

So, this week I mostly reviewed Christmas vocabulary with all of my classes. I even got to see my Skype classes in person this week which was nice. The kids were all really surprised to see me in person! Also, during all of my lessons we sang some Christmas classics, like, “We Wish You a Merry Christmas”, “Jingle Bells”, and I even taught one class “Twelve Days of Christmas”. Another activity that the kids really enjoyed was writing a letter to Santa Claus. These French kids had some interesting gift requests, lol. Here is a list of some things that the kids asked for:

Most common gifts:
-tablet
-FIFA 14
-Hair styling head
-Stuffed animals
-video games
-Legos
-soccer ball
-money
-board games
-remote-controlled helicopter
-Playstation
-3DS

Animals some kids wanted:
-puppy
-koala
-baby tiger
-baby panda

-headphones

One little girl wrote a touching letter. She asked santa for her mom to come back because she said that she would do anything for her. It was a little sad though, because I am not sure if her mom left her or if she died or something... :(.

A few of my kids gave me some christmas gifts. One girl, from my Wednesday class, made me a pretty creative Christmas card! It was pretty creative, and she even made his beard and hat using cotton balls.
She even wrote Happy Holidays above Santa!
Other kids gave me little chocolates, but on Thursday, I got a couple gifts from students right at the end of my last class. One girl gave me another poster of Taylor Swift (I swear I am going to have so many by the end of the year, lol) and a little christmas card. Then, there was a super cute, shy boy who presented me with a gift. As I was about to leave, the teacher brought him over and said that he had something for me. He quickly handed me a bag with a box of chocolates inside. It was so sweet! He was already heading back to his seat before I even got to say thank you. He was so shy, but this little gift really made my day :). Hopefully, this little boy will become less shy as I continue to work in this classroom.

So, all of my classes went pretty well this week. On Wednesday morning at school, one teacher brought little desserts and cider for us all because she passed some sort of exam. We were all happy for her, and I enjoyed the macarons and eclairs she brought!  Thursday morning was a bit stressful. Usually a teacher comes to pick me up right by my apartment, but today she overslept. Luckily, I called her in the morning and woke her up. I ended up walking to her house (and getting a little lost) so that we could get to the school faster. We ended up running a bit late, but at least we made it! I just had to shorten my two first classes of the day.

Tuesday afternoon, we had a pretty satisfying lunch at the high school. I had turkey, salad, mushrooms, potatoes, cheese, raspberry mousse, tangerines, chocolate, and bread!

Thursday night, I went out for dinner with the other assistants in and near Roanne! It was really nice to meet up and I had a delicious burger and fries.

So now I am officially on Christmas Break for the next 2 weeks, and I am coming back home for the holidays! I am coming back tomorrow, and I am excited to be reunited with my family and friends!

Can’t wait to be home,

Weekend in Paris

This weekend I visited my friend Alex in Paris! I may have taken too many pictures of the Eiffel Tower though...lol. I can’t help that it is always the first thing I think of when I think of Paris, and the weather was great for taking pictures!

Friday, I took two trains to Paris from Roanne. I took a 45 minute train to Vichy, then from there I took a 3 hour train to Paris. I got assigned a window seat so I was pretty happy! During the long train ride, a man even came through with a snack and drink cart; I felt as if I was on an airplane.

Pretty sky on the way to Paris
I arrived in Paris in the evening, and my friend Alex met me at the station. We walked around Paris some and then went to eat dinner. The restaurant was on a hill, so there was a pretty good view of the city from there. The restaurant was really nice, and what was interesting was that there were not any paper menus. Alex told me that this restaurant changes their menu practically daily based on what they buy, therefore, they just write it on a huge chalk board so they can easily change it. For dinner, I had chicken stuffed with mushrooms and mashed potatoes. For dessert, I had cheesecake.

Yummy chicken stuffed with mushrooms and mashed potatoes
After dinner, we walked around some more and I saw Notre Dame!

Notre Dame
On Saturday, we walked a lot around Paris. Alex showed me his university. Next, we walked through the Jardin de Luxembourg and the Jardin de Tuileries.

Then, we walked up to the Eiffel Tower. The sky was really clear and the sun was really bright, so I got some interesting photos. Get ready to see a little Eiffel Tower photo shoot haha.

After seeing the Eiffel Tower, we explored the Christmas Markets in the area. As we were walking around the market, and guess who we ran into?! French Santa! So, I got a picture with him of course ;).

Hangin' with French Santa in Paris!
Next, we went by some huge stores in Paris (Galeries Lafayette and Printemps) to see their Christmas window displays. Each year, the stores create displays that have moving animal puppets! The displays are probably geared toward children, but I think adults can appreciate them as well! I sure did!

Random kid who looked at me as I took a picture instead of looking at her mom haha

Then, we decided to enter the Galeries Lafayette which is a huge 7 story shop! There were really nice decorations inside, and there were so many people shopping.

We went up all the way to the 7th floor which is a rooftop terrace. There was a nice view of Paris from there!

Lovely Paris
After we finally got out of the store, we made our way to Montmartre, where we saw Sacré Coeur and walked through a Christmas Market. We had some Vin Chaud (hot wine) and enjoyed the lights and atmosphere. There were artists drawing people, and  there were people just taking in the sights by taking endless photos.

Later, we went to meet up with two international friends, Sven and Alex, who we met at UGA. It was nice to catch up and enjoy a meal together. After dinner, we walked the Champs Élysées which is probably the most famous road in Paris. The entire road was lined with lights and there was a huge Christmas Market along the road as well. We also watched some street dancers break dance!

Some lights on the Champs Élysées
At the end of the road, we reached the Arc de Triumph. It was nice to see it at night.

Arc de Triumph
On Sunday, we went to Versailles! It was my first time there so I was excited! Also, I spoke French with Alex the whole time I was there, which was great practice for me. I found that Versailles was very pretty. There was so much gold. The hall of mirrors was really cool as well.

Galerie des Glaces (Hall of Mirrors)
After the visit of the inside, we walked around the gardens. The gardens were nice, but unfortunately, some parts of the gardens were closed. Nonetheless, I still enjoyed seeing the gardens, but I bet they are even prettier in the spring/summer time.

Gardens in Versailles
Once we saw all there was to see at Versailles, we went to Paris for lunch. I had salmon and rice which was really good. I also had these cream puffs (choux maison) which were good as well. They weren’t as sweet as I was expecting, but they were still yummy.

Here I am with my dessert! yum!
After a nice lunch, we decided to go back to the Eiffel Tower! We waited about 45 minutes in line before we got to take the elevator to the top. It seems to always be crowded at the Eiffel Tower. Once at the second level, we had a good view of the city!

Alex and I on the second level of the Eiffel Tower
We also took the next elevator to the top level, and the view was nice as well. It was very windy and cold up there though, so we didn’t stay on that level too long.

After the Eiffel Tower visit, we went home and had some dinner. We had a quiche with some salad. Afterwards, I got to practice some more french with Alex’s family which was nice.

On Monday morning, I took two trains back to Roanne. I thought that my ride would be a lot shorter on the way back, but I was wrong. It all started off well though. This time, I took the TGV from Paris to Lyon, which was only about 2 hours. This train ride went pretty fast, there was also a bar on this train which was interesting. I got off at Lyon quickly because I only had 15 minutes to change trains. Usually, I can quickly find my train and the correct platform. This time, my train was nowhere on the train departure schedule...I was really confused. I decided to go ask the information desk, and they told me that the next train to Roanne would be in 2 hours... At first, I had no idea what I was going to do for 2 hours, but then I quickly realized that the huge mall (La Part Dieu) is right across from the station! So, I ended up having a nice time touring the mall (it was my first time there) and checking out the Christmas Decorations. I also got some Christmas shopping done for my family which was great! This train delay turned out to be a good thing after all! :)

Inside La Part Dieu
Finally, at around 4pm, I made it back to Roanne! This particular train from Lyon seemed to have a lot more stops than usual so it took about an hour and 35 minutes. Currently, I am pretty exhausted, but I had a great weekend in Paris thanks to Alex and his family!

On to my last week of work before two weeks of vacation,

Magdalena

Teaching Week 8: Christmas Lessons Continue

Monday was pretty chill; I just did some grocery shopping and Christmas lesson planning!

Tuesday, I usually teach four classes but this time I only taught three. In the first class, I taught them Christmas vocabulary with flashcards. Then, we played a game where each kid got a flashcard and they had to ask around and find someone who had the same card as them. At the end of the lesson, I handed out color by number for them to do for homework, and they were super excited about it! In the second class, we went over a Christmas activity worksheet that the teacher had given them for homework. Then, I read them a little Christmas story, and the kids had to fill in the missing words from the story with words from a word bank. The teacher and I walked around and checked the students’ work. Some of the kids really didn’t have a grasp on the Christmas vocabulary quite yet. We are going to continue with Christmas next week so there is still time for them. Next came recess, which meant tea and cookies!

After recess, I taught my usual third class (which is a class of little kids 6-7years old). I stayed with them for the rest of the morning because my usual fourth class was having a presentation on pedestrian safety put on by the police. In my third class, we went over Christmas vocabulary using flashcards. Then, we played a memory game where the kids had to try to uncover matches of the Christmas vocabulary words that they had learned. I put the flashcards up on the board and held them in place with magnets. Then, I labeled the X and Y axis with numbers and letters so that the kids could tell me which image they wanted me to turn over. At first, we played this game all together, and then, I divided the class into two teams. The kids really enjoyed this game!

After the morning school, I had lunch with Kim at the high school. The lunch today had to be one of my favorites! I got salmon, couscous, veggies, laughing cow cheese, bread, and Tiramisu!

Such a good lunch!
After lunch, I had my two Skype classes. In my first Skype class, I had my little groups of 2-3 students. I had them review body parts and numbers by having them draw monsters. I had one student describe a monster that I had already drawn and the other had to draw it by just listening to their partner’s description. Then, I had them switch roles and I showed another monster. Next, we reviewed Christmas vocabulary with flashcards. At the end, I asked them questions and they had to respond with the correct vocabulary word. For example, “Where does Santa leave the presents?” and “What kind of decorations do you put on a Christmas tree?”

For the second Skype class, I taught the entire class at once. I described a monster for the class to draw and after, a student came to describe another monster that I had drawn for the class to draw. This activity helped the kids review parts of the body as well as numbers. After that, I started talking to the class about Christmas and how to wish someone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Then, I introduced Christmas vocabulary to the kids with flashcards. I also taught them the song, “We Wish You a Merry Christmas.” The sound on Skype was being a little annoying toward the end of the lesson though... it kept going in and out which was a little annoying, but at least the majority of the lesson was problem-free!

After class, I went to my french host family for dinner and we had Raclette. We melted cheese using a special electric table top grill. Everyone got their own special little pan to melt their cheese in. After the cheese was melted, we scraped it off onto our potatoes. We also had a variety of deli meats (hams and salami) that went along with the meal. It was very tasty! For dessert we had yogurt and truffles.

On Wednesday, I taught three classes. I did the same thing in the first two classes. I taught them Christmas vocabulary using my handy dandy flashcards. Then we played the game where the kids searched for the person with their same card. I gave them a vocabulary sheet with all of the words and pictures written to help them play the game. At recess, these kids were all about the Pokemon cards again. They were showing them off as well as trading with other kids.

After recess, I taught a class of little kids (6-7 year olds). Usually, I am with the older kids, but the teacher wants me to help out in the younger classes sometimes. In this class, we reviewed the numbers 1-12. Then, we played a number bingo. The kids all had different game boards with four numbers written on them. They had to listen and cross off the numbers I called. After bingo, I went over Christmas vocabulary with the flashcards. Next, we played the memory game with the words. I split the class into two teams to make it interesting. The kids got really into the game... they got so excited when they found a match!

After classes, I had lunch. Later in the afternoon, I went into town to buy some Christmas goodies and I had a Nutella crepe after doing some shopping. Yum!

On Thursday, I taught four classes. I taught three at the first school. In the first two classes (6-7 year olds), I taught Christmas vocabulary by using my flashcards, and after, we played the memory game with the words. Then came recess, so I had a cup of tea. This time in the teacher’s lounge, there was also some chocolate cake that i got to try. It was really good! Then, in the third class, I showed them a powerpoint of Christmas vocabulary words and pictures of houses decorated for Christmas. Next, we continued to review vocabulary by using flashcards. Then, we sang, “We Wish You a Merry Christmas” and some other British Christmas Song about Father Christmas that I had never heard it before.

After class, I came home for lunch, and soon took a bus to my afternoon school. The class I work with Thursday afternoons is so sweet! Today, before the lesson started, two girls came up to me and gave me Taylor Swift posters. They told me that they remembered that I said I liked Taylor Swift. (side note: on my first day at the school, they asked me about favorite singers and I said that I like a lot of different singers and Taylor Swift is one of the ones I like). So these kids remember things I say! They are so thoughtful and nice! They also gave me a collage of the Christmas words that I taught them last week. Another girl brought a Christmas book from home so that she she could show me that one the author’s was Magdalena :). I joked around telling the kids that it was my book and they believed me! (After, I quickly told them that I was kidding though, lol).

I'm an author! lol
We started off the lesson by reviewing Christmas vocabulary. The kids knew pretty much all of the words! I was pleasantly surprised! I could tell that they reviewed them throughout the week. Then, we played a game where everyone received an image and had to find the person with their same image. Next, I taught them the song, “We Wish You a Merry Christmas” even though most of them knew it already. I had the groups of 3-4 students come up and sing it for the class. Afterwards, we all sang the song together as a class. The kids enjoyed it so much, that I decided to teach them a verse to the song in addition to the chorus (which is the part they all knew). They liked learning something new and I am already looking forward to seeing them again next week!

After class, I stopped by a chocolate store called Révillon. The factory is actually here in Roanne as well, and it's a pretty well know chocolate brand in France. I ended up getting a few things for my family for Christmas.

Révillon Store and the factory is nearby

Can’t believe that there are only twelve days left until Christmas Eve,

Fête des Lumières

On Friday, Kate, Kim, and I went to Lyon for the Fête des Lumières! We arrived in Lyon in the early evening. We had dinner and hung out with our friends Tony and Flavien. Then we went out to see the different spectacles.

The Fête des Lumières attracts millions of visitors from all over the world! It really is an amazing festival. It all started in 1852 to celebrate the inauguration of a statue of Mary which was placed at the top of Fourvière hill in Lyon. The people in Lyon lit up the façades of buildings by placing candles on their windowsills (history info thanks to the little festival guide brochure). Today, it has become much more than just candle lights... there are so many wonderful spectacles that are shown on the façades of the buildings! There are basically little short films or light shows going on every few minutes at many different areas of the city. I took a few videos which I will be sure to upload to give y’all an idea of what it is all about. The colors and images in the spectacles were so magical. There were so many people there! Luckily, the organization of the festival was very good. We didn’t have to wait too long to see any spectacle, and the spectacles were shown very frequently (maybe every 10-15 minutes). They also had clearly marked paths showing where to enter and exit the biggest spectacles. The metro was probably the place we had to wait a few minutes, because there was so many people trying to get there at the end of the night.

Kate and I at the Fête!

So many people everywhere!
On Saturday, we left Flavien and Tony’s place to go get some lunch in Lyon. We went out for lunch at Flam. It was my second time at this restaurant and this time I had a different flam. I had one with ground beef, potatoes, onions, and cheese. For dessert, I got a chocolate banana crumble. It was very good!

Yummy Flam

Delicious crumble
We were lucky that we arrived around 12 or lunch because we were quickly seated. Around 1pm, so many people entered the restaurant! I think there was a group of about 30 people from Spain that came and it seemed like they were a never ending group! I am sure that they had to make a reservation in advance because there was so many of them.

After lunch, we took the metro to the train station, and we were back in Roanne in the early evening. I was so tired after the days in Lyon, so I went to bed early. I am so glad I got to experience the Fête des Lumières and I hope to come back one day to see it again! :)

On Sunday, I went to mass and talked with the priest again. I hope to meet this polish family that he keeps telling me about soon! Today is a festival in Roanne as well, and it is called Tous en Flamme. Kate and I went out to see what it was all about. There were lots of people out in the square in front of the city hall. There was a marching band that played some music. Then, there was a show where people painted different images. They would paint on what seemed like plastic or something because when they were done, they would just tear it off and start painting something else. It was something that I had never seen before.

It was pretty chilly though, so it was hard to stay out for long. This random lady passed out chocolate candies to us and to other people. It was really nice of her!

As Kate and I walked back to our apartment, we noticed some more Christmas decorations in another square in town.

Pretty decorations in Roanne
Love all of the Christmas decorations,

Teaching Week 7: Clothes, Colors, and Christmas

So Monday was pretty exciting because it was December 1st! I got to eat the first chocolate of my advent calendar :). Later I went grocery shopping, and then planned some lessons.

On Tuesday, I taught four classes in the morning. In the first class, the teacher wasn’t here, so there was a substitute. He was this really nice old man, who was really enthusiastic. He was excited to review his english along with the kids during the lesson. I taught the kids clothes vocabulary and we reviewed the colors. Then, I put four pictures of people I drew on the board. Each drawing a name and they were wearing different outfits. I asked the questions about the clothing of the four people and they had to tell me which person I was describing. Next, I had the kids come up with their own questions to ask their classmates. In the second class, the kids showed me their color by number turkeys that they had colored for homework. Unfortunately, a few kids didn’t finish the coloring... they said they didn’t have time...wow...they didn’t have time to color. I think some of them just forgot about the assignment. Then, the kids worked on presenting themselves in pairs. After the second class, we had recess, and I had a cup of tea like usual.

In the third class, I reviewed colors with the kids by showing them little animal flashcards that I made. Then, I passed out the flashcards, and each student got a chance to come up and describe the colors of their animal. In the fourth class, I talked more about the history of Thanksgiving, and the students completed a Thanksgiving vocabulary worksheet as a class.

I had lunch at the high school with Kate and Kim like most Tuesday afternoons.

Fish, veggies, lemon tart, salad
Then, I had my two Skype classes. In the first Skype class, I had my little groups of 2-3 students at a time. I reviewed clothes vocabulary with them and then I had them describe the clothes of the pictures I drew of some people. They also reviewed colors as well by describing the clothes in the picture. After that, I described a person for them to draw and color to see if they could understand all of the vocabulary. The activity went pretty well. In my second Skype class, I taught the entire class at once. I showed them pictures of four people I drew, I described two of them, and they had to identify which two I was describing. Then, I described two people for them to draw and color. The teacher then chose some students to come up and show me their pictures so that I could check if they were correct.

Later in the evening, Kim and I met Fatima in town because Fatima had invited us to a Flamenco Show at the theatre here in Roanne. The Christmas lights in town near the theatre were really pretty as well! This was my first time at the theatre and I really enjoyed it! It's really pretty and the Flamenco show was cool to watch as well.

Christmas lights in Roanne!

Inside the theatre in Roanne

Here we are before the show!
The theatre got pretty crowded, so we were lucky that we decided to come early! We got some pretty good seats. Before the show started, we noticed that a few seats in the row right in front of us were reserved. We were surprised to find out that the seats were for the president of the Flamenco Association, his wife, and his translator friend. So, they sat right in front of us for the entire show. Unfortunately, photos were not allowed, so I don’t have any of the show. There were four people in total who performed. There was a singer, a guitarist (who played non stop without looking at any sheet music... he had it all memorized), a clapping girl (who kept the beat), and a dancer. After the show, they had some spanish goodies for sale. I got some sangria, a tortilla, and some spanish candies.

Spanish goodies!
Then, there was a Q&A session with the Flamenco group which was pretty cool as well. We stayed for a bit of it.

There are the performers taking questions

I am so glad Fatima invited us! It was fun to see something like this and I hope to see another show at the theatre soon!

On Wednesday, I taught three classes in the morning. In the first class, I talk half of the class at a time. So I had two groups of 12-13 for about 30 minutes each. First, I had them look at different pictures of families and they had to listen and identify the family I was describing to them. Then, I had them retell the Brown Bear story so they could review the animals and colors. They had some trouble focusing though so I have to fingure out how to direct their attention better the next time...I think they might just be over the whole Brown Bear story because we have been looking at it for a few weeks now.

In the second class, I taught the class about baseball. I myself do not know much about baseball, so I had to do some research before I felt comfortable talking about the rules of the game. I started off the lesson by asking the students what they already knew about baseball. This one little boy in the class basically explained the game to everyone pretty accurately. This boy knew his baseball stuff and he made my job easy. I added some details to his explanation and I showed the class pictures of baseball equipment and as well as a baseball field.

Then came recess. This recess took me back in time to when I was in fifth grade...lol because all of the kids were walking around and trading Pokemon cards! There were boys and girls trading and playing Pokemon cards throughout the entire recess time and it made me nostalgic.

In the third class, we went over how to say the date and descriptions of weather using flashcards. Then, I led a game of number bingo with half of the class. Each kid received a bingo card with four numbers varying from 1-30. I picked out random numbers from a little box and the kids had funny commentary during the game. Some kids were clueless about the numbers and some kids were just quick to tell me they did or did not have the number I called. There was one boy, who was sitting right in front of me, who was getting a lot of his numbers confused. At one point he had crossed off three numbers, (all he needed was for me to call the number 18) and I called number 28. He thought that was 18, so he started to cross it off while happily starting to say bingo! I saw him doing this, and quickly told him that I said “28” not “18”... and he says “crap” really loud (in french) lol and starts to laugh along with all of the other kids haha. It was a pretty funny moment. Poor kid. He was so disappointed that he didn’t win.

In the afternoon, I met up with Melissa and Clare to watch the Hunger Games: Catching Fire at the Cinema in Roanne. It was my second time watching the film, but my first time watching it in french! It was also my first time watching a movie at this particular Cinema. So our movie was scheduled to start at 1 40pm. We got to the theater around 1 10ish thinking that would be enough time to get tickets and everything. Well, surprise, surprise, the cinema was closed down during lunch time. They opened up about 1 30ish, so we quickly got our tickets, and somehow managed to still be early for the movie. Anyways, I really enjoyed watching the film again! I did prefer the english version though, but listening to the french voices was interesting as well.

After the film, Melissa, Clare, and I met up for drinks with Kate, Kim, and Jack. We all had a nice time chatting and I got a delicious hot chocolate!

Nice bar/restaurant in Roanne where we had drinks
Thursday, I taught 3 classes in the morning and one in the afternoon. In the first class, I showed them a powerpoint with christmas vocabulary and with pictures of nicely decorated houses. The kids really liked looking at the pictures. After the presentation, we played a game where they each got a flash card with a christmas picture and they had to find the classmate with the same picture as them. I did the same activities with the second class. In the second class, we had some extra time left over, so I taught the kids a Christmas carol. I taught them, “We Wish You a Merry Christmas” and they really liked it! Most of them have heard it before probably on the radio or playing in different stores. Then came recess which means: tea break!

After tea time, I taught another class. I started off by reviewing Christmas vocabulary flashcards with them. Then, I showed them the powerpoint of pictures and the Christmas vocabulary. Next, we played a game where each kid got a flashcard and they had to find the classmate with the same card as them. It was basically like a giant game of go-fish. Kids took turns asking others if they had their card and it was good speaking practice for all of them. Next, I taught them, “We Wish You a Merry Christmas” and they wrote the lyrics down in their notebooks. At the end of the lesson, I started to teach them “Jingle Bells” as well. I sang the song with two other kids who told me that they knew it. Singing with them was fun! These kids really enjoy learning songs and singing in general.

After lunch, I took a bus to my last class of the day. We reviewed clothes vocabulary with flashcards. Then, we reviewed colors and clothes with the four drawings of people. I had them ask questions by describing an article of clothing worn by one of the people. The rest of the class had to figure out which person was wearing that article of clothing.  For example, “Who is wearing a pink skirt?” The kids had to answer in complete sentences, such as, “Ashley is wearing a pink skirt.” Then, we reviewed Christmas vocabulary with flashcards. Next, I showed the class my Christmas Powerpoint with vocabulary words and pictures of nicely decorated houses. The kids were amazed by all of the lights on the houses in the US. At the end of class, I passed out a vocabulary sheet with all of the words and pictures that they learned this afternoon.

After school, I headed to my bus stop, but once I got to the bus stop, I realized that I had left my USB drive at the school... So, I had to go back to the school and get it. Because of that delay, I missed my usual bus. The buses are pretty frequent though, about every 20 minutes, but I didn't feel like waiting today. So, I decided to walk back to my apartment. It was about a 35 minute walk. I passed a few little scenic areas though which made the walk more enjoyable.

Lots of trees!
Enjoying my time here,

Magdalena
